$50,000 WORLD RECORD BONUS

The fifth running of the Ironman Western Australia triathlon will again see the professional athletes race for a $AUD50,000 bonus for the first man/and or female to break their respective Ironman Triathlon world record times.

The men's professional field has 25 confirmed starters for the December 7 race and they will be chasing the Ironman Triathlon world record time of 7:50:27 set by Luc Van Lierde at Ironman Europe in 1997.

The women's long standing Ironman Triathlon world record time was broken this year at Ironman Austria by Sandra Wallenhorst of Germany. The finishing time that 14 professional women competing at Ironman Western Australia are now aiming for is 8:47:26.

The $AUD50,000 is awarded to the first person to break their respective world record. If second place also betters the time they are not eligible for the bonus.

Ironman Western Australia is being held in Busselton on December 7, 2008 and will feature 1200 athletes from around the world competing in arguably the toughest one-day event in the world.
